Practical Waterproof Flooring Options

Two great examples of waterproof flooring options are luxury vinyl tiles and luxury vinyl planks. These are similar; tiles are square or close to square and planks more closely represent traditional flooring types.

Square tiles may make more sense in bathrooms, kitchens, etc., where you would normally expect marble or stone. Planks are better for more open spaces, as they enhance the flow of large areas.

Waterproof flooring is a practical solution for kitchens, bathrooms, and everyday living spaces.

LVT / LVP Flooring

LVP stands for Luxury Vinyl Plank, designed to mimic hardwood flooring, while LVT stands for Luxury Vinyl Tile, designed to replicate stone or ceramic tile. Both are durable, waterproof, and stylish alternatives, with LVP usually coming in long planks and LVT in square tiles.

This flooring option is cost-effective, durable, and looks great. The downside is that it doesn't add much in the way of value to a home and cannot be refinished.

Advantages

  • Cost-effective
  • Durable for everyday use
  • Waterproof
  • Looks similar to laminate or wood

Considerations

  • Does not add significant home value
  • Cannot be refinished
  • Typically replaced rather than restored

With modern technology, this flooring option is quickly replacing laminate flooring because of its benefit of being waterproof versus laminate, while often being more budget-friendly.

Cork Flooring

Cork flooring is a controversial flooring option. Some people love it and some people hate it. Cork is commonly used in pinboards, which are spongy and weak. In stark contrast is cork flooring, which has been treated to be harder and stronger.

Advantages

  • Hypoallergenic
  • Quiet underfoot
  • Insulating qualities
  • Sustainable material
  • In some cases can be refinished

Considerations

  • Can show wear quickly in high traffic
  • May fade in direct sunlight
  • Irregular color appearance

Laminate Flooring

Laminate flooring is an inexpensive option. Laminate flooring uses a composite, usually MDF or similar, and has a flooring pattern printed on a very durable surface layer. Modern laminates try to simulate a wood pattern and texture.
